Logan Purcell: 3 Pieces for Guitar
A note from the composer:Hello, Reader! I want to thank you for adding my music to your library, and showing your support for new music through Sound Ecologies. This collection of music represents my first attempts at writing for classical guitar, and publishing scores of my music, so I thank you for picking up a copy. The first piece in this book, entitled “4 Landscapes for Classical Guitar,” is a piece directly inspired by natural landscapes. I wrote each of these miniatures while traveling in 2018-2019, and the musical material attempts to reflect the natural scenes I encountered in my travels. From the cloudy skies of the city of Belgrade, to the dunes and depths of Santa Rosa beach, to the sprawling Italian Alps, these 4 movements are the memories of places I’ve visited and the natural wonders they held. The second piece, called “Grace,” was a gift to my girlfriend, Olivia Thompson, for her birthday in 2020. It takes inspiration from J.K. Mertz, a Romantic-era composer known for the pianistic textures and the sounds of the then-popular bel canto style of opera that can be heard in his solo guitar works. Particularly, this piece was inspired by the beautiful “Romanze” from his Bardenklänge collection, which features a soaring melody over a subdued bassline and inner voice structure. The final piece in this book is a duet entitled “Overview Effect.” The piece takes its name from a psychological shift encountered by many astronauts upon observing the Earth from deep space. The piece attempts to convey what it would be like to experience the atmospheric, surreal, weightless feeling of floating through space and seeing the earth as nothing but a small blue dot. The piece makes use of the extended range and color that a duet provides to produce lush harmonies and interesting textures.Logan Purcell
